We haven't seen the particular problem you are having, but were not
running the packaged Debian version either.

Did you run the check permissions script?

We have had some permissions problems that were not found by the check
permissions script, the cause was from one admin using the uid mailman
and another admin using root.  You might want to look at the permissions
if the script doesn't show anything wrong.
