Hello everybody,
I have been talking with Chris Fearnley, and it sounds like he could use
a hand with organizing meetings. He said, (I hope I am not upsetting
Chris by quoting him here):
> If you have a talk or series of talks to give, it would help a lot.

> facilitators.

So, in the spirit of moving things along and helping each other out, I
wanted to ask what sorts of things people would be interested in doing
at the meetings. I am in the new maintainer queue with Debian, and as
part of the application process, I have been doing a lot (read: a really
lot) of reading documentation, both about packaging and about the
project in general. If it turns out the kinds of things people are
interested is something I can answer from these readings, I would be
happy to lead a discussion, or at least facilitate a Q&A session.
Some of the ideas for things I thought people might be interested in:
1) Install fest. The Debian installer is famous for being the most
difficult part of the Debian experience. I thought that if we could
help some people get over the intial hurdle, it might help.
2) Building sample packages. I know this is something that has been
done in the past, but perhaps people have forgotten, or would like to go
over it again. Ideally, I would like to use a fairly small program, so
that we could go from beginning to end in one meeting, but we can also
do a larger program over the course of two meeitngs if people like that
better.
3) Discussions about administrating Debian boxes. Differences in
run levels, updates, and so forth. I am not as familiar with other
Linux distros approaches to these things as I am with Debian's, but I am
aware that they are a bit different. I pictured this topic as kind of a
grab-bag, where everybody brings a problem/question or two, and we try
to sort them out.
These are, of course, just the things I can come up with off the top of
my head. Many of you (all of you?) have been in PADS longer than I
have, and may want to do something entirely different here. I am not
trying to push my agenda on people, just throwing out ideas to see what
kinds of things people are interested in. If you have other
suggestions, or would like to faciltate a meeting, that would be great
(I am not the world's best public speaker (^:).
Thanks, all, and hope to hear from you.
P.S. - Len, can we still use your space? If not, we can use my house,
but it is a smaller space, and I on't think I have net access for more
than a few people at a time.
